This month we will discuss a manuscript that examines the prevalence of large vessel occlusion strokes (LVO) in a single county. The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) have recommended endovascular thrombectomy LVO strokes— rather than administering tPA, the clot is removed. This procedure is being called a breakthrough.

The PLUMBER (Prevalence of Large Vessel Occlusion Strokes in Mecklenburg County Emergency Response) Study’s objective was to determine the prevalence of LVO strokes in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. To accomplish this, they conducted a cross-sectional study of patients transported by Mecklenburg County EMS from December 2015 to October 2016. Overall, there were 2,402 patients included in the study that had a dispatch complaint, or the EMS providers’ primary impression was consistent with Stroke or TIA
